Policy for Carriage of Lithium Batteries
(Ver. 4, 2026‐03)
Atlantic Container Line must ensure the safety of our crew and vessels and have therefore made the decision to restrict the acceptance of lithium batteries (UN3090, UN3091, UN3480, UN3481) as follows:
USED Batteries: ACL WILL NOT accept any used lithium metal or used lithium‐ion batteries for shipment in
containers, or for the RORO decks. Used lithium batteries relevant to Special Provision 188 are also NOT accepted.
NEW Batteries: ACL may accept container shipments holding new lithium metal or lithium‐ion batteries. New
batteries are required to be in the original manufacturer packaging and be shipped in accordance with SP230 of
the IMDG code.
- All new carriage opportunities are subject to review and a written approval received before bookings WILL be accepted.
- Lithium batteries WILL NOT be accepted in Consolidated containers unless they are shipped as non‐hazardous in accordance with SP188.
- UN3090 (Lithium Metal Batteries)
- UN3480 (Lithium‐Ion Batteries)
- UN3091 (Lithium Metal Batteries contained, or packed with equipment)
- UN3481 (Lithium‐Ion Batteries contained, or packed with equipment)
- ACL WILL accept the above UNs as hazardous when batteries are contained in original manufacturer packaging (including E‐Bikes, Drones, Generators, etc.), along with the accompanying new lithium battery.
- Each piece of machinery/device WILL have one accompanying battery only.
- Lithium batteries shipped as non‐hazardous under SP188 of the IMDG code will be accepted from third-party warehouse only when batteries are brand new and in original Manufacturer’s packaging.
- ACL WILL NOT accept full container loads of stand‐alone batteries (UN3090, UN3480)
